FAQ

How much oxygen does the early suit hold?
The documented Early Access launch setup shows 600 Oxygen. Equipment and future balance updates may change this value, so check the suit panel after a patch.
What is the Purified Oxygen recipe?
The current-build field report lists 2 Oxyworms, 1 Metal, and 1 Ice. The finished item restores 120 Oxygen in the documented launch build.
Does more Gas increase breathing time?
No. Oxygen and Gas are separate HUD resources. A Gas-capacity upgrade does not increase the Oxygen tank.
When should I turn back?
Turn back or refill when the remaining oxygen only covers the return flight. Searching a wreck, fighting, repairing, and finding an entrance all add time beyond the marker distance.

What should you do first to extend oxygen range?

Repair the Public Oxygen Station as soon as the Outskirts route makes it available. The launch-build field report records this repair cost:

MaterialAmount
Metal3
Electronics2
Wire1
Electrical Tape3

Collect the full set before leaving the train. Electronics and Electrical Tape also appear in communication and machinery repairs, so spending the last pieces on an optional object can force another scavenging run. The resources and materials guide explains which environmental objects produce these components.

Once repaired, the station turns the Outskirts into a route with an intermediate refill instead of one long round trip from the crashed train. This matters most when several objectives occupy the same side of the map.

Why should you keep some Ice unprocessed?

Ice competes for more than one survival use. It can support water production, but oxygen infrastructure and portable oxygen also require it. Do not process the final useful pieces into water before a long trip.

A repaired station only helps if you arrive with the resource it needs. Keep a small reserve in storage or carry enough for the route you are about to fly. This is more useful than converting every piece immediately because thirst and oxygen create different failure conditions.

For the broader opening sequence—train power, food, water, and communications—use the Station Outskirts walkthrough.

How do Oxyworms unlock portable oxygen?

Collecting Oxyworms unlocks Purified Oxygen in the documented launch build. Its recipe is:

IngredientAmount
Oxyworms2
Metal1
Ice1

Purified Oxygen restores 120 Oxygen. The early suit shown in the same build holds 600 Oxygen, so one refill adds a meaningful buffer without replacing stations as the cheaper routine option.

Use portable oxygen when the uncertainty begins at the destination: searching several rooms, circling a structure for an entrance, repairing machinery, or fighting near a wreck. Using it next to a working station wastes the flexibility you crafted it for.

How do Oxyworm Nests change route planning?

Oxyworm Nests can refill oxygen away from the train. Once you recognize a nest, treat it as a route checkpoint:

  1. Leave the train or Public Oxygen Station with a full tank.
  2. Reach the known nest before beginning a deeper search.
  3. Refill, then continue toward the objective.
  4. Keep portable oxygen for mistakes, combat, or a blocked entrance.

Distance alone is a poor measure of safety. A farther objective with a known refill on the way can be safer than a closer wreck with no station or nest nearby.

Why are Oxygen and Gas different?

The HUD tracks Oxygen and Gas separately. A documented early setup showed 600/600 Oxygen and 50 Gas; later equipment increased Gas to 200 while Oxygen stayed at 600.

Gas belongs to equipment that consumes its own supply. Stations, Oxyworms, nests, and Purified Oxygen extend breathing time. Do not choose a Gas-capacity upgrade expecting it to solve an oxygen route.

The cold protection guide covers the other major environmental limit. Better insulation does not create more breathing time, and more oxygen does not make a cold route safe.

A safer oxygen checklist before leaving the train

  • Start with a full tank.
  • Name the next refill point before you leave.
  • Keep Ice available when a station is part of the route.
  • Carry one Purified Oxygen for an unfamiliar destination.
  • Budget time for the objective and the return, not just the outbound flight.
  • Retreat if the remaining supply only covers the trip home.

This preparation becomes especially important during the Chapter 1 walkthrough, where communication searches and the later jammer route consume more oxygen than their marker distance suggests.
