What controls whether an exploration run succeeds?

The current launch build asks you to manage three limits at the same time:

• Oxygen decides how far you can travel and how long you can search at the destination.
• Temperature decides which cold routes your equipped insulation can survive.
• Inventory and condition decide whether you can finish a repair without losing protection or carrying the wrong materials.

Food and water remain part of opening preparation, but they do not replace either environmental budget. Stabilize them at the crashed train, then plan each flight around a known refill or heated position.

What are the useful launch-build numbers?

Current-build field reports document these starting targets:

How should you plan a route?

1. Read the exact objective and its materials before leaving the train.
2. Name the next oxygen refill and the next warm position.
3. Carry one emergency refill when the destination is unfamiliar.
4. Keep the inventory light enough to bring back the missing component.
5. Turn around when the remaining oxygen only covers the return flight.

Distance is not the whole risk. Searching for an entrance, repairing machinery, fighting, or recovering from a wrong turn all consume the margin that a map marker does not show. Use the resources guide to identify materials by object and interaction prompt.

Where do these systems gate Chapter 1?

The Outskirts first teaches oxygen infrastructure around the train and Public Oxygen Station. The journal later asks for 100 Cold Protection, which opens the colder route toward Depot. Inside Depot, Service Warmers raise the ambient-temperature objective while also creating safer points along the route.

The Chapter 1 walkthrough puts those gates in story order. If a meter or objective behaves differently after a patch, record the build and use report a bug for a reproducible issue.
