FAQ

Where do I raise Cold Protection?
Use the Space Suit wardrobe at the crashed train and equip protection pieces in the available torso, arm, and leg slots.
Is 100 Cold Protection enough?
It clears the documented progression gate, but it does not make the suit immune to freezing. Damaged equipment and long exposure can still cause frostbite and hypothermia.
Which materials help early?
Cardboard and Foam are documented early insulation materials. The useful choice depends on the protection total and the secondary penalties shown on each piece.
Should I maximize Cold Protection?
Not automatically. Once the objective clears, compare armor, radiation, electrical protection, and satiety drain before replacing another piece.

How do you reach 100 Cold Protection?

When Raise Cold Protection to 100 appears in the journal, return to the crashed train and open the Space Suit wardrobe. Cold protection is assembled across body slots rather than purchased as one permanent upgrade.

Equip available insulation on the torso, arms, and legs while watching the total shown on the suit screen. The objective clears when that displayed value crosses 100.

What launch-build setup can cross the threshold?

A current-build field report documented this 106 Cold Protection example:

SlotItemCold Protection
TorsoKnitted Teddy Bear+34
Left armFoam+22
Right armFoam+22
Left legCardboard+14
Right legCardboard+14
Total106

This is an example, not the only valid combination. A total of 102 can clear the same 100-point requirement. Use the pieces you already have instead of farming a perfect suit before continuing.

The resources and materials guide explains how Foam and Cardboard appear in the environment.

What tradeoffs do insulation pieces create?

Cold Protection is only one column on the equipment screen. The documented launch setup shows that insulation can change other stats:

  • the Knitted Teddy Bear torso adds Cold and Radiation Protection but carries an armor penalty;
  • Foam provides strong Cold Protection on the arms but can increase Satiety Drain;
  • Cardboard gives less Cold Protection than Foam in the documented slots but can add Electrical Protection and Armor.

Once the suit is above 100, another Cold increase is not automatically an improvement. Prefer the setup that clears the gate while keeping hunger and defense manageable for the route ahead.

Why can frostbite still happen above 100?

Equipment condition can change after leaving the train. If a critical insulation piece is damaged, the protection total you planned around no longer describes the working suit.

Retreat when these problems begin stacking:

  • a key protection piece is damaged;
  • the frostbite or hypothermia warning is escalating;
  • no working heater or warmer area is close enough to stabilize the route.

In the Depot, repaired Service Warmers become useful safe points as well as quest machinery. Move from one heated position to the next instead of attempting a long direct crossing with compromised protection. The full sequence is in the Depot walkthrough.

How do oxygen and temperature limits interact?

They remain separate budgets. Better insulation may make a cold region survivable, but it does not give you more time to search it. Likewise, portable oxygen does not protect a damaged suit from freezing.

Before a cold route:

  1. verify that the suit total is still at least 100;
  2. repair or replace damaged protection pieces;
  3. identify the next heated position;
  4. plan an oxygen refill independently;
  5. carry only the materials needed for the next repair.

Use the oxygen guide for stations, Oxyworms, and route budgeting. The Chapter 1 walkthrough shows where the cold gate appears in progression.

What should you do after the objective clears?

Stop farming insulation solely for the journal number. Keep a small reserve for damaged pieces, then shift inventory space toward the materials needed by the next repair.

The purpose of the 100-point setup is to open a route that previously forced an immediate retreat. It is not a final armor build, and future Early Access patches may rebalance every value on the table.
